The other common position — and the reason this unit has so many channels — is between two consoles. A sub-mixer on stage sends its balanced returns back to the front-of-house desk; the two desks are fed from different mains circuits, and the potential difference between them is what puts hum on every return. Sixteen isolated outputs let one rack unit lift a whole multicore at once.
Each channel runs through its own 1:1 centre-tapped isolation transformer, balanced in and balanced out, and the unit is entirely passive. Because it is a line-level link between desks, 48 V phantom power does not pass across it — the stage sub-mixer goes on powering its own microphones.
